Anyone who wants to open a paint can, for example, does not buy a special tool just for this, but uses their screwdriver as a pry tool, provided it is a slotted screwdriver. Here, the flat end of the screwdriver is pushed under the can lid and you then press down on the handle with your hand. The cans are not only easy to open, but if you are careful, you can also avoid bending the lid too quickly. Your own strength is amplified by the leverage. A crowbar works on the same principle, but is suitable for significantly heavier tasks, provided the crowbar is properly manufactured.<\/p>\n
The principle behind leverage is very simple. To move an object, we need force. Either enough force to counteract the force of gravity, if we want to lift something for example, or enough force to counteract any other forces. This can be the force of friction, for example, because it is with this force that the lid holds onto the can, and we must now overcome this force to get the lid off our paint can.<\/p>\n
If we wanted to open the can with our bare hands, we would have to apply the necessary force over the short distance in which the friction force prevails. Thanks to our screwdriver, we apply less physical force over a longer distance, but the result is the same. The lid of the can rises much less than we push the screwdriver down with our hand. We therefore cover a longer distance, but need less force.<\/p>\n
Therefore, it is significantly easier to pry open a door with a long crowbar than with a short one. The path needed to break open a door, for example, is quite short. The longer our crowbar, the less force we need ourselves, or the stronger the doors we can break open with the crowbar. As the name suggests, this is not about careful opening. The crowbar breaks, meaning it destroys.<\/p>\n
But for a pry tool to work at all, you have to find the lever with it. The screwdriver in our paint can example has a lever because the rim of the can protrudes slightly. The screwdriver therefore rests on the rim, a small piece extends under the lid, and the absolute majority juts out beyond the rim. We thus have a large and good lever. If the can were designed in such a way that there were several centimeters of space between the lid and the can rim, our lever would be much weaker.<\/p>\n
Important factors for pry tools are thickness and material quality. At the point where the lever rests \u2013 the can rim in our example \u2013 the forces act massively; this point is under enormous stress. If the material is weak or not hard enough, the pry tool bends and can no longer perform its task. Anyone can try this with a copper nail; it is not a usable lever because it is far too soft.<\/p>\n
But bare hardness achieves nothing either, because steel that is too hard tends to be brittle and break. What is needed is a sufficiently thick tool that has been properly hardened. A few euros more make the difference with a crowbar between a usable tool and a broken piece of steel.<\/p>\n
