Did you know how old the locking cylinder is? It was invented by the American innovator Linus Yale and developed in the mid-19th century. In 1868, Yale founded a small factory dedicated specifically to manufacturing door locks based on his patent. It was there that these locks were produced on a large scale for the first time.

A locking cylinder refers to the cylindrical inner part of a lock into which the key is inserted. The most common type is the so-called profile cylinder. However, there are many different variations available on the market, including double cylinders and half cylinders, depending on size and application. Locking cylinders are generally classified into three security levels according to the degree of protection they provide. Only a key with the exact matching profile can be inserted into a locking cylinder.

How does a locking cylinder work?

Inside the locking cylinder, the correctly fitting key raises or lowers specific pins. Only then can the key be turned and the locking mechanism released.

Ideally, a cylinder lock should be protected by a smooth security fitting made of hardened steel to prevent the cylinder from being easily drilled out or pulled out.
