What is a basement window? A simple explanation of basement windows!
8. April 2024A basement window is a window that is installed in a basement room and therefore provides natural daylight as well as a ventilation option. Basement windows—similar to ground-floor windows—pose a particular security risk in terms of burglary protection, as they are easily accessible and, like any window, can be easily broken. For this reason, basement windows are often equipped with protective devices such as window grilles, which is also very sensible and recommended from our perspective. Basement windows are usually, like most other windows, tilt-and-turn windows. However, some basement windows are also hopper windows, as are occasionally found in attics.

How a basement window should ideally be designed
The question of the right basement window cannot be answered in general terms, as it always depends on how the basement room is used and whether it is heated, unheated, or possibly even used as living space.
In principle, basement window frames are usually made of wood, plastic, or aluminum, although wood is rarely used in basements. Basement windows are exposed to constant moisture and splash water more than other windows due to their proximity to ground level. If a basement window is installed in a heated or inhabited room, plastic is a sensible frame material, as it has good insulating properties and is also easy to maintain.
For unheated basement rooms, aluminum or—less commonly—steel windows are suitable. These frames have lower insulation properties but are more stable.
In general, regardless of the frame material or whether the room is heated or not, a window grille is always advisable for basement windows. It not only protects against burglars but also against small animals such as mice and rats.
If the basement window is above ground level, it is installed like a normal window. If it is below ground level, a so-called light shaft is required for installation. In front of the window, a shaft is built into the property and fitted with a drainage base so that water can drain away.
Burglary protection for your basement window: Locksmith service Munich – Mario Pichelmaier is happy to advise you!
A basement window is easily accessible for burglars, and if it is not secured, it can be very easy and quiet to cut a hole into it or pry it open—allowing the intruder to enter the house and move upward from the basement. For this reason, it is also very effective to keep all doors locked. It is, of course, very time-consuming and labor-intensive not only to break into the basement window but also into all interior doors that must be passed through.
However, basement windows themselves can also be well secured, making it much more difficult to open them easily, quietly, and unnoticed:
- A window security film prevents a window from being easily smashed.
- A sturdy external window grille prevents direct access to the window.
- A window bolt, such as a crossbar lock, prevents the window from being easily pried open and forced.
