Definition of Apartment Door Lock

An apartment door lock is also known as a room door lock and refers to the mortise lock for internal room doors in an apartment or also the mortise lock for the main apartment entrance door.

The center distance (Entfernungsmaß) of apartment door locks is standardly 72 mm. (See also the image below)

Wooden apartment doors standardly have a so-called backset (Dornmaß) of 55 mm. But what exactly is meant by backset?

The backset refers to the distance from the locking cylinder to the front edge of the forend (the front edge from which the deadbolt extends).

The center distance and backset of apartment doors differ from the center distance and backset of front doors, as house front doors generally have larger dimensions.
