What is a furniture safe? A furniture safe explained in simple terms!
1. November 2023A furniture safe (Möbeleinsatztresor), also called a cabinet safe, is a safe that is not built into the wall or floor, but rather into a piece of furniture, such as a desk or a cupboard. It is ideally suited for use at home and – in contrast to a wall safe or a floor safe – can easily be retrofitted.
A furniture safe can be very small, but also somewhat larger, and can feature either a mechanical lock with a key or an electronic one with a numerical code. If it is fitted with a lock, it is usually a particularly secure double-bit lock (Doppelbartschloss), which is typically built into safes.
Furniture safes with an electronic lock are generally slightly more expensive than equivalent models with a mechanical lock. Many manufacturers offer one and the same model in both versions, with a mechanical or electronic lock. A furniture safe also costs more the larger its dimensions are.

Resistant and Fireproof: Security Characteristics of a Furniture Safe
Naturally, furniture safes are built to be particularly resistant to force, for example with double-walled construction. To ensure that the items protected inside the safe are reliably secured not only against theft but also against fires, a furniture safe must also consist of fireproof material according to DIN 4102-A1.
Unlike a wall or floor safe, it could theoretically happen with a furniture safe that it is not opened during a burglary, but simply dismantled and taken away. To prevent this from happening if possible, the anchoring inside the piece of furniture must be particularly stable. Ideally, the safe is anchored not only inside the piece of furniture but also into the wall behind it. Of course, it also makes sense to install the safe in a rather hidden place if possible, so that it first costs a potential thief valuable time to find it.
What Is Suitable for Storage in a Furniture Safe?
In a furniture safe, you can store everything that you would normally keep in a wall safe as well, for example jewelry, cash, or important documents such as passports or certificates. If you want to store binders in the furniture safe, you must make sure that the safe is suitable for this, meaning it has an appropriate depth for binders. Many furniture safes have height-adjustable shelves, so they can be configured larger or smaller.
The Resistance Grades of Furniture Safes
Furniture safes are divided into different categories regarding their security level and their resistance grade. The security levels are classified according to the European Standard EN 14450, and the resistance grades according to EN 1143-1.
For furniture safes, there are security levels S1 and S2, with S2 having slightly higher security standards. Regarding the resistance grades, the safes are subdivided from N(0) to V KB, whereby for private use at home, usually only the resistance grades N(0), N(I), and N(II) are relevant.
