What is a trapdoor? A simple and easy-to-understand explanation of trapdoors!
4. December 2023A trapdoor (Falltür) is a door that is installed horizontally in a floor or a ceiling. In residential buildings, trapdoors usually lead via a ladder to the attic or into the cellar. They are also referred to as a hatch or flap.
A trapdoor can be opened in two directions: either upwards or downwards. If the trapdoor leads to an attic and opens downwards, an extension ladder is usually attached to it, which in itself takes up no space and is therefore very practical.
However, trapdoors sometimes also seem eerie and threatening, because they can serve as a trap or secret access to a hiding place or prison. Those sentenced to death by hanging also took their last step onto a trapdoor, which then, when the executioner operated the appropriate mechanism, tore the ground from under their feet and ensured that the rope around their neck killed them. Fortunately, today one hardly has to connect such dark associations with trapdoors anymore.

The Lock of a Trapdoor
A trapdoor is usually secured with a snap latch, which functions exactly like a door latch. When closed, the snap latch is engaged. Instead of a door handle, there is a lever that can usually be operated with a hook. If the trapdoor leads to an attic, you pull the lever from below using the hook, which is usually attached to a long pole. If it leads into the cellar, you pull it from above. The trapdoor opens. If you want to close it again, you push it firmly shut so that the snap latch audibly clicks into place.
Especially with roof hatches, it is important that you actually close them firmly and with pressure, otherwise there is a risk of accidents: the heavy hatch door, to which an extension ladder is usually mounted as well, falls down and can hit the person standing underneath on the head. The click that you hear when the snap latch engages is therefore genuinely safety-relevant.
It is generally not possible to lock a trapdoor with a key.
Making a Trapdoor Burglary-Proof: Locksmith Munich – Mario Pichelmaier Will Gladly Advise You
Making a roof or cellar hatch burglary-proof is not easy, because their construction method usually does not allow for the installation of security locks. Padlocks usually do not help either, unless you install a device that prevents access to the lever. Our professional technicians and security experts will gladly take a look at your trapdoor. Their trained eye will quickly recognize whether and, if so, what kind of burglary protection is possible.
Otherwise, it is usually more sensible not to secure the access to the cellar or attic from inside the house, but from the outside – that is where burglars are more likely to try to gain entry. If your front door and all side entrance doors are well secured, the chances of a break-in are very low, and a burglar who cannot even get into the house in the first place cannot open the trapdoor to the cellar or attic either.
A roof or cellar window, on the other hand, can represent a real security risk. Here, it would make sense to ensure effective burglary protection. Simply arrange an appointment with us; we will gladly inspect your home and help you reduce the risk of burglary as much as possible.
