What is a peephole? A peephole explained!
21. September 2023A peephole is a security device in the front door of an apartment or house. It’s a kind of tiny window through which you can see who is at the door. A peephole doesn’t work in the other direction: the person outside cannot see who is looking through the peephole from the inside.
A peephole is not a standard feature, but it is quite ordinary and common in a typical apartment door in a multi-family building, and many entrance doors to single-family homes are also equipped with a peephole.
If your door doesn’t have a peephole, you can retrofit one. The Munich locksmith service – Mario Pichelmaier – will be happy to assist you with his extensive expertise. Contact us for a free, no-obligation fixed-price quote for installation.

Setting up a peephole
A peephole consists of a housing with a glass lens featuring a wide-angle lens and has a diameter of approximately one to three centimeters. The wide-angle lens has the advantage that you can see not just the tiny section of the peephole’s diameter in front of the door, but almost the entire area, allowing you to clearly identify who is at the door.
A peephole is pin-shaped and can vary in length, as it needs to be integrated into the door leaf, and doors come in different thicknesses. There are open peepholes and those equipped with a cover flap.
Location of a peephole
A peephole is usually located at a height of 1.40 to 1.65 meters, at the eye level of an average standing adult. If you are shorter or if it’s important in your family that older children can also use the peephole, it makes sense to mount it closer to the lower end of this range.
Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to install an accessible peephole as an alternative or in addition, allowing a person in a wheelchair who cannot stand to see through it. These accessible peepholes should then be positioned at the eye level of a typical adult in a seated position, i.e., at a height of 1.10 to 1.20 meters.
Of course, completely customized positions are also possible. If you’re having a peephole installed, you can try out beforehand which position is best for you and your family and agree on this with the installer.
Electric video surveillance as an alternative to the peephole
Recently, electronic video surveillance has become a popular alternative to the peephole. The advantage is that no hole needs to be drilled in the door. You can see who is at your door on a screen mounted at home, which is connected to a camera outside. However, the clear disadvantage compared to the peephole is that this technology requires electricity. If the power goes out, you have no way of knowing who is at the door. The peephole, on the other hand, is a purely mechanical, non-electric device.
Naturally, a digital, electronic peephole is significantly more expensive than an analog one. While you can buy a very ordinary peephole for under ten euros, and even the higher-quality models usually cost no more than 20 euros, an electronic video surveillance device instead of a peephole is rarely available for under 100 euros; you should almost always expect to pay at least 80 euros.
