What is a fitting? Door fittings explained simply!
5. January 2023The fitting (türbeschlag) is the part of a door that is bolted to the door from the inside and outside in order to protect the lock and the locking cylinder from violent attacks during burglary attempts. Furthermore, the door fitting serves the process of opening and closing the door.

An important element of the door fitting is the door handle (Türdrücker), which is also referred to as a latch or handle. (Alternatively, a door knob.) Escutcheons, cylinder covers, long plates, and short plates can generally also be part of the door fitting, depending on which fitting or protective fitting (Schutzbeschlag) is mounted on the door.
High-Quality Security and Protective Fittings
In specialist stores, people who place a particularly high value on burglary protection can inspect a wide variety of fittings, metal fittings, and protective fittings. High-quality security and protective fittings (with cylinder covers) ensure that the locking cylinder cannot be pulled out of the door, even with the greatest force. These fittings are highly recommended accordingly, especially if burglary protection is a high priority. However, these protective fittings are also significantly more cost-intensive than cheap standard fittings, especially since they are also available in all-steel quality.

Fittings and Appearance: The Aesthetic Function of the Door Fitting
Since a door fitting is clearly visible from the outside, it also has an aesthetic function. And because many people focus not only on burglary protection but also on a good appearance, they do not want to purchase just a fitting made of conventional aluminum, but rather one made of a higher-quality material. For instance, particularly noble fittings made of brass or stainless steel are also available in specialist shops.
