What is a lock cylinder? Lock cylinders explained simply!

A locking cylinder is one of the most important elements of a lock, but it should not be confused with the actual lock itself. From our experience as a long-active Locksmith Munich, this confusion happens often. The locking cylinder is NOT the lock, and conversely, the lock is NOT the locking cylinder; see also the following illustration of the locking cylinder:

Definition of Locking Cylinder

As the name suggests, a locking cylinder is cylindrical in shape. There are many different types of locking cylinders; for example, one can find half cylinders, double cylinders, and many others. The most common form of locking cylinder is known among professionals as the “profile cylinder” (Profilzylinder).

To open a door, for example, you insert a key into the locking cylinder that has the matching profile corresponding to the profile of the locking cylinder. When you insert a key into the locking cylinder intended for that key, the pins inside are lifted to unlock the locking mechanism of the lock.

A key with the wrong profile or with the wrong notches cannot release the lock mechanism, because the pins block the turning movement of the key. In many cases, a key with the wrong profile cannot even be inserted into the locking cylinder.

Profile cylinders are available in various designs and quality levels. Locks equipped with a double cylinder that can be locked from both sides are frequently used.

Locking Cylinder with Danger Function

Special locking cylinders are those equipped with a special danger function (emergency function). These cylinders can ensure the unlocking of the door lock even if the key is inserted from the inside or on the other side. Locking cylinders with a danger function are popular for use in the care sector, for example, so that caregivers have access to the corresponding apartment at any time, even if the key is left in the lock on the inside.

Locking Cylinders that Only Lock on One Side

In addition to double cylinders and locking cylinders with a double function, there are also locking cylinders that can only be locked on one side.

DIN Standard for Profile Cylinders

Since there is a DIN standard for profile cylinders, there is also a uniform standard for profile cylinders. The introduction of this DIN standard has ensured that consumers can purchase profile cylinders of various quality levels from a wide variety of companies and manufacturers, but always in a standardized format.
