What is a tilt window? The tilt window explained simply!
26. March 2024The window frame is the element of a window that surrounds the glass pane and into which the pane is fitted. A window frame is essential for a window and is often made of plastic or aluminum or—especially in older windows—wood.

Window frame materials: wood, aluminum, and plastic
Each of the three window frame materials has its own characteristics, which come with various advantages and disadvantages.
Wood is probably the most maintenance-intensive material for a window frame, as it is only durable and will continue to look good over time if it is properly and regularly maintained. A wooden window frame must be treated repeatedly, and especially outdoors it absolutely requires a coating of paint or wood stain, which also needs to be renewed every few years; otherwise, it will not be weather-resistant.
However, wood regulates humidity within a room and can therefore even help prevent mold. As a renewable resource, it is also particularly sustainable.
A plastic window frame is very easy to maintain. Once installed, it generally requires no maintenance at all, apart from occasional cleaning if you value a clean appearance. Plastic is thermally insulating, durable, weather-resistant, and also the most affordable material for window frames. In practical terms, plastic window frames have very few disadvantages; however, the living atmosphere created by plastic is often not as natural and authentic as that of living materials such as wood.
Aluminum window frames are relatively uncommon in private homes, whether single-family or multi-family houses. This is likely due to the comparatively high cost of aluminum frames. Aluminum is very strong, although the strength of wood and plastic is usually sufficient for standard buildings. However, when it comes to very large buildings with large window frames or glass façades, the additional strength provided by aluminum is a significant advantage. In terms of maintenance requirements and weather resistance, aluminum is every bit as effective as plastic.
Securing the window: burglary protection for glass and window frames
The window is a much more vulnerable part of a house than a door, especially the front door. Front doors are usually robust and sturdy, making it difficult for a burglar to break in quickly, quietly, and discreetly. The situation is quite different with windows: the window frame merely holds the glass pane and may provide thermal insulation, but it is not an obstacle to a burglar. With a little skill, the glass can be cut quietly and discreetly, and anyone unconcerned about making noise can simply smash it with a stone and gain access to the house.
For this reason, it is important to give windows—and also glass doors—a special role when it comes to burglary protection. You can do little to secure the window frame itself, but the glass can be protected with security film, for example, and a window security bar can prevent a burglar from opening the window from the outside. There are also specific burglary protection devices available for both the hinge side and the handle side of a window.
