What is a safe? A safe explained in simple terms!
10. October 2023A safe is a secure storage space for particularly valuable, important, or items that only authorized individuals are permitted to possess. These include, for example, cash, gold bars, jewelry, documents, data storage devices, and even weapons. A safe is sturdy and secure and must protect its contents not only from theft but also from fire.

Synonyms and different types of safes
There are other names for a safe, such as security cabinet, armored cabinet, or simply safe (from English). In everyday language, all these terms are used synonymously, but officially, there are differences between them. A steel cabinet is therefore a safe of the lowest security level, followed by a high-security safe, and finally, the safes with the highest security are armored cash safes.
Construction of a safe: What makes a safe so stable
The lock on a safe is usually the particularly secure double-bitted key lock. Sometimes, for even greater security, it is also used in combination with a combination lock.
Furthermore, safes often contain components that significantly hinder break-ins, for example, chemical additives whose flame-retardant properties inhibit the effect of a cutting torch. Or material components that cause drill bits to dull particularly quickly.
A safe, by its very nature, has no weak points, but is equally secure at all points – provided it is also installed in the appropriate location, which is particularly important for wall safes, which need the protection of solid walls to be truly secure.
However, it must also be said that the quality of safes for private use has declined in recent decades. Some quality features have fallen victim to cost pressures. For example, safes with a concrete filling in the cavity are no longer manufactured at all for cost reasons.
The best place for a safe
It’s always a good idea to install a safe in a somewhat hidden spot in the house. Sometimes it might be a good idea to install it in the wall behind a large wardrobe or in a similarly inaccessible location – this depends on whether items are regularly taken out of the safe and put back in, or whether it’s only opened in exceptional circumstances, for example, to get hold of emergency cash. If you keep your jewelry in a safe and want to wear it frequently, you obviously can’t be constantly moving a heavy wardrobe around. In that case, an inconspicuous but still easily accessible spot is sufficient.
The ideal location for a safe also depends on its size. For example, if it’s built into a wall, it must be surrounded by walls at least ten centimeters thick to be truly secure, as the body of such a wall safe is made of simple sheet steel. In most homes, a wall safe can’t be too large, and if larger items need to be secured—such as files or weapons—a floor safe is a good alternative. These are usually more spacious than wall safes.
There are also furniture safes, which are built into desk drawers or cabinets, for example. While they are not quite as secure as a wall or floor safe, they are a good solution for people who live in rented apartments.

24/7 emergency locksmith service with fixed price guarantee
Most of the time, it’s not safes, but front doors that we have to open in an emergency because someone has locked themselves out and can’t get home. It’s generally unreasonable to expect someone to simply wait for hours, or even days on weekends, in front of their door until the next locksmith opens, which is why we operate as a 24/7 emergency locksmith service. If a lock urgently needs to be opened, we’re there immediately.
We offer this service – as well as our consistently meticulous and almost always damage-free work – at a fair fixed price. When you call us and tell us exactly what happened, the locksmith will calculate the work involved and thus the fixed price based on your description over the phone. He will tell you this price, and from then on, you can rely on it. It’s complete, and any additional costs – such as night or weekend surcharges – are already included in this fixed price. Your final bill will not be higher than what we agreed upon over the phone. We promise you that – it’s our fair and transparent fixed-price guarantee!
