A window sash (Fensterflügel) is the part of the window that can be opened. It consists of a glass pane, the sash frame with a window handle, and the hardware fittings. The other part of the window, which is immobile and mounted into the masonry, is the window frame.

A window sash can be designed to open to the left or to the right, depending on the window hinge position. In a double-sash window, there are two window sashes that open in different directions. In addition, there are also triple-sash windows, where usually two sashes open in one direction and one sash opens in the other direction. As a rule, a window sash can also be tilted, meaning it opens a crack at the top, for example to ventilate the room. There are also various other ways to open a window sash.

How a Window Sash Can Be Opened

With a standard window sash, the tilt-and-turn sash, the window handle is operated and then the window is opened to the left or right. Alternatively, the window is only tilted. Both variants are possible.

However, there are also special forms of opening a window sash. With roof windows, for example, the window sash is usually pushed upwards. In addition, there are also sliding windows that do not have a classic handle, but are instead pushed into another window sash.

Furthermore, there are window sashes that can only be tilted – the tilt sashes – as well as those that can only be turned open – the turn sashes. In addition, there are fixed sashes that cannot be opened at all, and various special forms such as top-hung sashes, pivoting sashes, and reversible sashes.

The Material of Window Sash Frames

The window sash frame is generally made of wood, plastic, or aluminum. These building materials can also be combined with one another. Each of them has its own advantage: plastic is comparatively inexpensive and easy to care for, aluminum is particularly weather-resistant and correspondingly durable, and wood convinces with its natural charm and the visual warmth it radiates.

Double Glazing for Energy-Efficient Insulation

High-quality, well-insulating glazing is very important when it comes to keeping the warmth inside the house and thus reducing the building’s energy consumption. In this context, double glazing, which consists of two glass panes and a cavity lying between them, is very sensible. In modern houses, the window sashes almost always consist of double glazing, because so much energy was lost with single glazing that it has hardly been installed since the 1970s. In the meantime – for even better thermal insulation – certain gases are frequently channeled into the cavity instead of air. Since 2009, triple glazing has even been replacing double glazing in new buildings – and here, of course, the insulating properties are even more pronounced.

Privacy Protection on the Window Sash

It is part of the standard in many houses that the window sash is equipped with privacy protection. Usually, these are roller shutters that close off the window sash from the outside; in old houses, they are sometimes still wooden window shutters. If, however, no roller shutters or window shutters are present, it is not difficult to provide a remedy. Blinds, a pleated blind, or even curtains are quickly hung up and likewise represent effective privacy protection.
