According to crime statistics published by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior in May 2015, there was a significant increase in residential burglaries in 2014: more than 152,000 recorded cases – almost 2% more than in the previous year. This upward trend has been continuing for years. In this context, politicians called for harsher penalties for burglars.

The chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers, Roger Lewentz, stated: “We know that we are almost always dealing with transnationally operating gangs, which we must also combat across regions. Therefore, the interior ministers of the federal states have decided, among other things, to establish cross-border investigation commissions based on inter-state and international analyses in the future and to strengthen existing national and international security cooperation. We want to improve the clearance rate. That is why the police depend on public cooperation. Investigators need information to identify patterns and effectively combat criminal gangs. It is encouraging that 41.4% of burglaries were stopped at the attempt stage. Obviously, people have taken our appeals seriously and invested in technical burglary protection.” (Source: BMI press releases).
