What Is a Functional Mailbox?

According to the German Tenants’ Association (DMB), a mailbox must meet several requirements in order to be considered functional. Naturally, it must be lockable so that mail cannot be removed without a key. Neither tenants nor postal workers should be able to injure themselves on it. In addition, it must provide enough space for mail in DIN A4 format to fit completely inside—it must not protrude, where it could become wet or be stolen.

Public Mailboxes

A public mailbox is a mailbox into which you deposit mail that is to be sent. The most common public mailboxes in Germany are the yellow mailboxes of Deutsche Post. They are emptied once or twice daily—except on Sundays and public holidays—and the mail inside is then sorted for onward transportation. There are also mailboxes belonging to other private postal service providers that serve the same purpose. These are encountered much less frequently and usually only in certain regions. For comparison, in 2012 there were 112,000 Deutsche Post mailboxes and 6,000 mailboxes belonging to other postal service providers in Germany.

Types of Private Mailboxes

There are millions of private mailboxes in Germany—as many as there are residential units, since every residential unit is entitled to its own mailbox. Mailboxes can vary considerably in design. In larger apartment buildings or high-rise buildings, there is often a large metal cabinet divided into individual lockable compartments with slots—these serve as the mailboxes for the apartments.

Particularly in single-family homes, mailboxes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Examples include:

• Hollow compartments with mail slots built into the wall of the house or garden gate
• Slots in the front door that lead directly into the house, allowing the mail to fall into the hallway
• Freestanding models, usually made of metal, which can be very decorative and resemble miniature houses. While mail is inserted through a relatively narrow slot, a larger flap on the mailbox can be unlocked with a key to conveniently retrieve the mail.
• Sometimes, in addition to the mailbox, there is also a newspaper tube. This is practical because the newspaper does not have to be stuffed into the mailbox slot, leaving more room for letters. Unlike mailboxes, newspaper tubes are not protected; rain can enter during wet weather, and newspapers can easily be stolen.
