Basement Door
31. August 2023A basement can have different doors: the basement door that connects the basement with the living area, the door that leads from the basement to the outside, or basement doors that separate different basement rooms from each other. Depending on which function a basement door fulfills, it must meet different requirements and can therefore be made of different materials. Basement doors can be made of wood, as well as plastic, aluminum, or steel. Glass doors are rarely found in basements.
The exterior basement door
An exterior basement door leads from the basement to the outside and is therefore a secondary entrance door, meaning a door that also leads into the house besides the main entrance door. Secondary entrance doors are particularly attractive to burglars because they are not as visible as the main entrance door, allowing intruders to try their luck unnoticed and usually well hidden.
Especially when it comes to an exterior basement door, a staircase often leads down to it, making it even more concealed.
In addition, many people put a lot of effort into making their main entrance door burglar-proof but forget that all of this is of little value if just a few meters away there is an unsecured, simple basement exterior door that also leads into the house.
A basement door leading to the outside should therefore be stable and well secured. A steel door is suitable for this purpose. Steel doors are usually not particularly visually appealing, but the basement exterior door is typically hidden anyway. From a security perspective, steel doors are recommended. If your basement exterior door is also equipped with a multi-point locking system and security fittings and connected to an alarm system and motion detector, breaking in becomes significantly more difficult and intruders will most likely move on and look for an easier target.
The interior basement door
An interior basement door connects the living area with the basement. Security aspects are not as important for such a door, but good thermal insulation is essential so that heat from the living area does not escape into the unheated basement. A solid wood door generally provides good thermal insulation, and plastic doors also retain heat well. If you choose an aluminum basement door, it must be equipped with special insulating fillings.
Finally, there are also interior basement doors that separate different basement rooms from each other. They do not need to meet high standards in terms of thermal insulation or security, and most people also consider the appearance of a basement door to be of secondary importance. Many people choose steel doors for basement areas, but simple wooden, aluminum, or plastic doors are also suitable.
If there is a door between the basement and the garage, it must be a fire-rated door, which is required by law. The same applies to the door leading to the boiler room.
