The Kolonialsiedlung in the Munich district of Zamdorf

The Kolonialsiedlung, also known as the Afrikasiedlung, is located in the Munich borough of Bogenhausen, in the district of Zamdorf. It lies north of Eggenfelder Straße between Zamilapark and the Steinhausen residential area. It has a width of around 650 meters and extends approximately 400 meters from south to north. The total area covers about 23 hectares. To the southeast of the Kolonialsiedlung there is a beautiful allotment garden area covering around 3 hectares.

The settlement, originally called “Erwerbslosensiedlung Zamdorf,” was established in 1934. Its streets were named after well-known African explorers. For example, Rohlfsstraße commemorates Gerhard Rohlfs, who was the first person to cross the Sahara Desert from north to south.

The “Afrikasiedlung” also includes a square called Emin-Pascha-Platz. It is named after Eduard Schnitzer, better known under the pseudonym Emin Pasha, who served as the governor of Equatoria, a Sudanese province.

Officially, the settlement was renamed “Kolonialsiedlung,” or “Afrikasiedlung,” in 1935.

Some of the former street names have become controversial because the historical achievements of their namesakes are viewed critically today. For this reason, Karl-Peters-Straße was renamed Ida-Pfeiffer-Straße in the year 2000. Ida Pfeiffer was a well-known travel writer.
